The National Irrigators’ Council says the appointment of a new CEO at the Murray Darling Basin Authority is an opportunity for the Authority to deliver on its promises of a balanced Basin Plan.

NIC CEO Danny O’Brien welcomed Dr Rhondda Dickson to the job.

“Both the Chair and CEO that were responsible for the Guide last year have left or are leaving and this provides a clean slate for the MDBA to work from,” Mr O’Brien said.

“We have welcomed the commitments by MDBA Chair Craig Knowles that he will seek to balance the social and economic impacts of water reform with the needs of the environment and we expect Dr Dickson to help ensure the MDBA delivers on those commitments.

“The fact she comes to the job from the Department of Agriculture is a positive as she should have a better understanding of primary production and the needs of rural communities and food and fibre producers.

“Mr O’Brien said the NIC wished retiring CEO Rob Freeman well and looked forward to working with him in his new role as a National Water Commission commissioner.
