The new CEO of the National Irrigators’ Council, Danny O’Brien, will visit Sunraysia next week.

Mr O’Brien was recently appointed to the NIC, which is the peak national body for irrigators, and is travelling to Dareton for Western Murray Irrigation’s annual general meeting on Tuesday night.

Prior to the meeting, he will meet with local irrigator and commodity groups and tour irrigation blocks in the region.

“Everyone is facing difficult circumstances at the moment, whether it’s through ongoing drought, low commodity prices or the impact of the Murray Darling Basin Plan which is currently under development,” Mr O’Brien said.

“I will be particularly seeking views on the Sustainable Diversion Limits (SDLs) issues paper recently released by the Murray Darling Basin Authority, an issue that will have huge implications for all irrigators.

“I look forward to hearing the views of local irrigators so the NIC can better represent their interests in our dealings with government.

“Irrigation is the key economic driver in Sunraysia and we will be working to ensure it remains a viable, sustainable industry well into the future.”
