NATIONAL IRRIGATORS’ COUNCIL

THE BASIN PLAN REVIEW

Advocating for the Australian irrigated agriculture industry

The Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) has responsibility to undertake a review of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan by 2026. The Basin Plan Review is a very important process, which will guide future decisions on water management in the Basin.

A discussion paper from the MDBA is due in early 2026, prior to formal consultation which will help shape the review and recommendations to the Federal Water Minister by late 2026.

Key MDBA Documents

2024 Early Insights Paper

The Early Insights Paper shares our current thinking on some of the Basin’s most complex challenges. It will help you understand more about our key areas of focus for the upcoming Basin Plan Review.

2025 Basin Plan Evaluation

The 2025 Basin Plan Evaluation assesses the Basin Plan’s achievements and implementation process. It builds on previous evaluations undertaken in 2017 and 2020.

2025 Sustainable Rivers Audit

The Sustainable Rivers Audits are comprehensive assessments of the environmental health of 23 major rivers in the Murray–Darling Basin.

Future Basin Plan implementation must focus on moving beyond ’just add water’.

Governments must optimise outcomes through being smarter and more strategic with environmental water; investing in complementary measures (such as invasive species control, fish passageways, habitat restoration, fish screening, riparian land management); and a paradigm shift of working together to achieve win-wins for environment, cultural objectives, communities and industries.
